Central Coast Civil Air Patrol Squadrons Search and Rescue Exercise, Santa Maria, January 28, 2023
On Saturday January 28th 2023, Civil Air Patrol members from throughout the Central Coast gathered at the Santa Maria Airport to conduct a multi-squadron Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX). During Saturday’s SAREX more than 30 Civil Air Patrol personnel conducted a simulated search for a missing aircraft. Aircrews in three specialty equipped Civil Air patrol aircraft flew aerial search patterns the area northeast of Santa Maria Airport. The air crews also trained in the use of radiotelemetry in locating a practice emergency beacon. Base staff worked on search management, radio communications and logistical support. The day was particularly busy as the communications group also provided support to the ongoing mission of the Civil Air Patrol to take aerial imagery of flood damage caused by recent storms. That mission is being conducted on behalf of FEMA. The performance of the squadron members was assessed by experienced skills evaluators to make sure all members are fully prepared for real search and rescue missions.
